Accident spoilers follow.
Accident will air a special, impromptu episode later this month – breaking with traditional house style.
The scenes, which were completely unscripted, explore the pressures and difficulties the paramedic team – Jan, Sah, Teddy and Iain – face every day as frontline health workers.
Here’s a full roundup of the seven biggest moments to watch out for:
1. Jan’s battle continues
Jan returns from a short break feeling rejuvenated, but her good humor is tested when she receives a call from a regular customer, Robbie, who is drunk and reluctant to go to the emergency room.
Finally, they convince Robbie to get in the ambulance and Jan and Teddy rush to their next cry: a woman who goes into anaphylactic shock caused by a nut allergy.
2. Teddy struggles with a crisis of confidence
Teddy comes under extreme pressure when his female patient stops breathing in the back of the speeding ambulance.
Despite some hesitation, Teddy manages to put aside his fears to make a surgical airway. He saves the patient’s life, but then continues to doubt himself.
At the hospital, Teddy continues to be abused by the woman’s panicked husband, but is reminded by Jan that he took the lead in an extremely difficult case and handled it well.
3. Sah and Jan are getting more and more frustrated
Jan and Sah find themselves unable to answer urgent calls as they are stuck in the ambulance queue outside ED.
Sah is further frustrated to stop to scream, only to be diverted to a bigger emergency, where the same thing happens again.
Things come to a head when Jan and Sah are called in for a possible stroke, only to find the woman unharmed and simply hoping the paramedics will run a food shop for her.
Furious that they turned down cardiac arrest for this, Sah and Jan rush there, but arrive too late. Despite their best efforts, the man dies and Jan is forced to come to terms with his wife’s grief.
4. Jan brings bad news
On day three, Jan receives statistics stating that the Holby Paramedics are underperforming and are among the worst in the country.
She encourages the team to act faster and finds herself meeting Robbie again, who has now cut off his hand trying to access the house he used to share with his wife.
Jan is later alarmed to discover that Robbie’s wife actually died two days ago.
5. Iain supports Teddy
After going through a crisis of confidence with his earlier case, Teddy later approaches a dangerous situation alone, against Iain’s advice.
As things escalate, Teddy begins to find his confidence with Iain’s support.
He calmly manages to talk down a frightened and armed Scott, who is suffering from mental illness.
6. Jan has a public outburst
Jan begins to lose her cool later in the week, when a female patient complains that she is stuck in the ambulance queue with a minor leg injury.
At the end of her tether, Jan gives an impassioned speech about the lack of NHS resources, unaware that the impassive patient has a large online following and is filming her.
7. Jan is involved in a shock accident
At the end of the week, Jan is again called to a drunken Robbie, who this time has collapsed and is coughing up blood.
Determined to get him to the ER quickly, Jan reverses into a road, but hits a pedestrian in the process.
Horrified, Jan struggles to concentrate as Sah takes control of both patients, then is forced to watch as the staff struggle to save them in the ER.
Dylan later informs Jan that the pedestrian has been stabilized, but she takes no comfort from this as Robbie has died.
Shocked, devastated and exhausted, Jan returns home, where her mask finally slips off as she breaks down on Ffion.
Accident broadcast on Saturday evenings on BBC One, and streams on BBC iPlayer.
