“She had a lot of creative control, all day, every day, and she just demanded certain things happen,” Johnson explains. “There were parts of the books that just wouldn’t work in a movie, like the inner monologue, which was incredibly cheesy at times. Saying it out loud wouldn’t work. It was always a struggle. Always. When I auditioned for that movie, I read out a monologue: Persona [a 1966 Ingmar Bergman film] and I thought, ‘Oh, this is going to be really special.’”

Johnson was 23 when she turned opposite Charlie Hunnam and Closer playwright Patrick Marber revise the initial fifty shades script – which Johnson claimed James was after the… Sons of Lawlessness actor withdrew from the role, citing a scheduling conflict.

“It just got crazy,” she said. “There were many different disagreements. I’ve never been able to speak truthfully about this because you want to promote a movie the right way, and I’m proud of what we’ve finally made and everything is as it should be, but it was difficult.”

After Dornan signed up, he worked with the Cha Cha Really Smooth star and Taylor-Johnson tried to bring the script back to what it was before James scrapped it.

“We would shoot the movie that Erika wanted to make, and then we’d shoot the movie we wanted to make,” Johnson claimed. “The night before I would rewrite scenes with the old dialogue so I could add a line here and there. It was chaos the whole time.”

Although it was a stressful experience, the founder of TeaTime Pictures has no regrets and admits that the steamy movies were good for her career. While the fifty shades films were critically panned, making over $1 billion at the box office.

“There are things I still can’t say because I don’t want to damage anyone’s career and I don’t want to damage anyone’s reputation, but both Jamie and I were treated very well,” the star said. “Erika is a very nice woman and she was always nice to me and I’m thankful she wanted me to be in those movies.”
